Our Vision is to achieve economic opportunity and success in Kansas.

Our Mission is to empower those who are striving toward the mainstream to secure economic self-reliance.

Our Business Philosophy is to be an economic development engine that uses partnerships to create economic opportunities for all Kansans.

Brian Black President and CEO

Our History

In 1910 black and white citizens working together in the interest of all segments of the community organized the National Urban League. In 1953, a group of interested citizens in Wichita recognized the need for Urban League services to address problems and needs related to the economic, social and general well being of minority citizens.  They formed a sponsoring committee to use the name "Wichita Urban League," thereby establishing official affiliation in 1954.  In 2004, the name was changed to Urban League of the MidPlains, Inc. Now our name has changed again, on January 29th, 2007 it was announced at the annual business meeting that our new name is The Urban League of Kansas. Today the National Urban League is headquartered in New York City where they coordinate the work of local leagues in 104 cities and the District of Columbia.

Our Strategic Vision

In pursuing our mission, we use these five strategies:

Ensuring that all of our children are well educated and prepared for economic self-reliance in the 21st Century.

Empowering all people in attaining economic self-sufficiency through job training, good jobs, entrepreneurship and wealth accumulation.

Empowering all people in attaining economic self-sufficiency through homeownership and financial literacy.

Working to build healthy and safe communities to eliminate health disparities through prevention and education as well as ensuring complete access to affordable/quality healthcare for all.

Empowering all people to take an active role in determining the direction, quality of life, public policy and leadership in their communities through full participation as citizens and voters, as well as active community services and leadership development.
